Leave the Leaves!

Leaves falling in Sligo Creek

Leaf fall is one of nature’s most efficient recycling mechanisms. By leaving your leaves in your garden, the nutrients that went into creating those leaves during the spring and summer are returned to your soil during fall and winter. This leads to better soil health (and better gardens) in years to come.

We have written about this topic in the past but the New York Times recently posted an excellent and thorough article about the how’s and why’s in leaf management.

When in doubt, do what the forest does.
